Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood. This day is observed in different forms throughout the globe. International mother's day 2021 is on Sunday, May 9th.
Now, of course, mothers’ contributions cannot be returned in one day or even in an entire life, honestly. She is the one who thinks about us even before we learn to think for ourselves. She knows our heart even before she saw us or knew us. The sacrifices she makes are uncountable. Her intentions are always pure and full of concern.

And the only way we can return even an ounce of her love and concern and sacrifices will be by making her feel proud and taking care of her. A mother barely asks for anything. Therefore, we, as her children should and must take proper care of her and her needs.

History of Mother’s Day

The very first mentions of Mother’s day celebrations date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who honored their mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele by holding festivals. The early Christian festival is known as “Mothering Sunday” is the modern precedent for Mother’s Day.
Once it started to be a major tradition around the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their ‘mother church’ which refers to the main church around the area they live in, where a special service would be held.

Over some time, the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted towards a more secular holiday. Children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation to show their gratitude. Before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s, this custom eventually faded in popularity.

Importance of Mother’s Day

This is truly a special day for all the mothers whose hardships are barely acknowledged in this male-dominated society. In every step of our life, our mothers' role is supreme. She is the reason behind every success, and she's the consoler after every failure comes our way. She never stops cheering for us. She never loses her faith in us even if we lose our faith in us. She is our first-ever teacher, friend, and guide.

She gets the second lease of life when her child is born. She smiles when her child smiles, she cries when her child weeps and she sleeps when she finds her child asleep. Her child becomes a source of happiness. She is content if her child is so. For her, the whole world revolves around her children and family.

She takes care of every need of her child and her family and in return, she asks for nothing. Therefore all her silent services to everyone are never returned or even appreciated. She takes care of us every moment of every day of every year since the day she conceives us, therefore it's kind of unfair to have just one single day to celebrate her. Instead, we must take care of her and appreciate all her efforts every day and every moment. She does a ton of thankless jobs for us without any wages or holidays. Therefore, the celebration of motherhood should be in every waking moment of our daily lives.

She is the perfect embodiment of love, affection, sacrifice, and generosity.

Her presence in this world provides some solace to the suffering of humanity. Her smile removes all sorrows and frets from the world. Mothers are a constant source of strength for everyone.

Ann Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe

The origins of Mother’s Day, dates back to the 19th century, as celebrated in the United States. Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped to start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs”, in the years before the Civil War, to teach local women how to properly care for their children.

In a region of the country still divided over the Civil War, these clubs later became a unifying force. Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day” in 1868, to promote reconciliation, at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers.

The abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe was another precursor who brought the idea of Mother’s Day to the table. Howe wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870,  a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” in 1873, to be celebrated every June 2.

Some other early Mother’s Day pioneers were Juliet Calhoun Blakely who was a temperance activist. She inspired a local Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the 1870s. Around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the duo of Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering worked together to organize a Mothers’ Day. Hering is even known as “the father of Mothers’ Day.”

Anna Jarvis

As a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis the official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s. Anna Jarvis came up with the thought of Mother’s Day, following her mother’s death in 1905, as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.

In May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia, after gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker,

At one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia, on that same day, thousands of people attended a Mother’s Day event. Jarvis, following the success of her first Mother’s Day, set on to see her holiday added to the national calendar. She stayed unmarried and childless her whole life. She started a massive letter-writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians, arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements and urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood.

Many states, towns, and churches as an annual holiday had adopted Mother’s Day by 1912. The Mother’s Day International Association was established by Jarvis to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
